coil is designed to work locally on your device. We do not operate any servers, and we do not collect, store, sell, or share your personal information. There are no accounts, no advertising, and no analytics or tracking of any kind.
Deleting a book in the app, clearing the app's data, or uninstalling the app removes this information. We never see it.
coil only connects to the internet when a feature you use requires it. The services below receive your IP address and the specific request, as any web server does. We do not send them anything else, and we receive nothing back about you.
The app's typefaces are bundled with the app itself — no font service is contacted.
The optional Premium unlock is processed entirely by the store you installed the app from — Google Play Billing on Android, or Apple's App Store (StoreKit) on iPhone and iPad. We receive only an anonymous confirmation that the purchase succeeded — never your name, email, or payment details.
When you choose to share a passage, coil renders an image on your device — the passage, over the background you were reading it under — and hands it to your device's own share sheet, together with a link to the app's page. Where that image goes is entirely your choice at that moment; it is never uploaded to us, and we have no record that you shared anything. If you save the image instead, it goes only to your device.
coil never requests or uses your location. The backgrounds that follow the time of day or the phase of the moon are computed from your device's own clock alone.
The "Read to Me" feature uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine. Depending on your device settings, your operating system's speech service may process the spoken text. Kids Mode collects no information whatsoever and shows no advertising.
coil does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. There is nothing to collect: the app has no accounts, no messaging, and no data transmission beyond the content requests listed above.
If a future version of coil changes how data is handled, this policy will be updated and the effective date above revised.
